It is our policy to ensure that a safe and secure environment is provided for all children in our care. Children First, the Department of Health and Children,s Guidelines on protecting children from abuse, places a duty of care on childcare providers to protect their children. It is our policy to report any suspicions about physical, emotional, sexual or neglect to the health board. Parents are kept informed and confidentiality will be maintained at all times. If a member of staff is accused of abuse, the matter will be investigated immediately in collaboration with external authorities, and other users of the service will be protected.
Create an environment in our clubs which encourages children to develop a positive self-image, regardless of race, language, religion, culture or home background;
Help children to establish and sustain satisfying relationships within their families, with peers, and with other adults.
Encourage children to develop a sense of autonomy and independence;
Work with parents to build their understanding of and commitment to the welfare of all of our children.
We do this by:
Ensuring that our licensees are up to date with legislation on children and their protection
Making sure that all our licensees are carefully recruited and trained
That all apply for Garda Vetting through Barnardos
Letting parents know how to voice their concerns if they are not happy
Develop a code of behaviour between the staff and children.
Seeking out training opportunities for staff and providing literature for all staff to ensure that they can recognise the signs and symptoms of possible physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse and neglect and so that they are aware of the local authority guidelines for making referrals. We ensure that all staff know the procedures for reporting and recording their concerns in the club.
Having procedures on actions to take if an allegation is made against a member of staff or volunteer.
Code of behaviour between staff and children
While physical contact is a valid way of comforting and reassuring a child, it should only be in
response to the need of the child, not the adult.
Staff should never physically punish or verbally abuse a child
Staff should never tell jokes of a sexual nature in front of a child
Staff should not develop favouritism with any one child
Licensees must complete a course in CHILD PROTECTION covering all topics including:
Responding to Suspicions of Abuse
